Textual Analysis Saw

How have the micro elements been used to create the genre ?

Mise en scene
The audience is limited to what they see through the limited use of lightening and the use of a torch as a prop, which acts as the only light source for both the audience and the character Limiting what the audience sees leaves the audience on edge and frightened, which are themes of the horror genre. The blood splatter in first scene is revealed by the torch this implies that someone is injured or dead or there is violence and these are key themes of the horror genre, this also can foreshadow the rest of the film as blood in the first scene hints the certification of an 18 slasher film.

Camera angle and movement
The scene also starts off as an P.O.V arc shot, which lets the audience know what's going on and the P.O.V arc shot reveals more and more and also the audience feel attached to the person because its a P.O.V shot and they feel on edge as its arcing round there could be something that jumps out. The camera then cuts to an over the shoulder shot as if something is behind him and so the audience feel concerned and worried. The camera then cuts back to the P.O.V arc shot to build suspense and a torch comes on as if its guiding the audience round. Then there are close up shots to show detail to the audience on the panic of the man's face

Editing
The credits at the start reveal going to be a slasher because in white, bold and capitals it says saw but then the logo gets blood splatters on it and barbed wire coming across it, the long continuous shots suggest that we are there.

Sound
There is a loud non-diegetic sound when saw appears in the credits at the start which gets the audiences heart race a little bit and then through out the first little bit all the sounds are diegetic which brings a sense of realism to the audience and makes them feel like they are there
